Good Beginning, Same (Bad) End Mepit was pregnant. She didn’t quite know how, but it must have been at least a month ago. It was deep spring, Mepit had just reached adulthood. Algon had also met a girl, she was pretty and kind, and was an experienced mother. The two walked along the road, Algon skipped along with happy thoughts, Mepit tried to follow but had to drag at least two pounds of belly behind, she was tired and, obviously, hungry. After a while she got immobile, her belly and her womb where to big together. Algon helped her but said that ‘after giving birth, she could survive alone’. After a few long hours of labour, Mepit sat by a proud eight children, four slept, four instantly started sucking, Mepit's mom had made sure they all started sucking, but she didn’t care. After a bit they swapped roles, Mepit waited for them both to sleep so that she could get something to eat, but they didn’t. After a few hours, Mepit began to twitch for hunger, but she couldn’t abandon the babies. After a few days, hunger was her brain, she was much smaller. It felt so weird, the babies kept sucking, so much in a gulp, sometimes she could actually feel her stomach getting smaller. She gazed down at the babies, they where nearly as big as her. A week passed, the mild was lower, much lower, her ribs were visible and her legs where weak. Two weeks and the babies where nearly as big as a football, but Mepit was skinny, the widest part of her body was her chest, at an inch, all babies sucked at once, desperate far hydration, but there was none, not a drip, not a teeny little microlitre, but they thrived, not this thing, barley alive, a skeleton, organs and veins where literally all that was there. The cubs left the nest in hope of new food, but one stayed, the only girl, the looked at the lifeless face, great big cups under the eyes had fallen to the floor. She touched Mepit, she was cold, she picked up her skin, it was so free, so dry. She felt her ribs, between each was at least an inch. Algon came, he looked at the skunk and it’s mother. “When Mepit was young…” He explained, “This same thing happened, her mother survived though.” He looked at the body, he felt it, he rubbed it, he stroked it. As cold as ice, and hard as rock. Baby skunk sucked but nothing, nothing but air came out. Mepit had died. Algon and baby skunk (newly named Salavation) wandered the forest, Algon’s mate kicked him out. It was nice with Salavation, she didn’t complain, and she lost weight quickly. Algon dropped her off at the house of Simon the zookeeper, Algon never seen what happened, but he did remember Salavation, she was at a place that she could never get overfed or underfed. After two years she was dropped off at the forest again, she met Algon, they became close friends and even made a successful fat camp. Friend ship became life, then they had four little babies… Geew, Elmie, Iwe, and most fattest of all, Little Mepit.
